Federal Minister Launch Clean and Green Karachi Drive

Karachi: Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr. Farooq Sattar said under a scientific method garbage will be sent and dispose off at landfill site during the 15 day clean and green Karachi campaign that has already begun in the metropolis. Cleanliness drive was aimed at mobilizing various organizations and this would continue throughout the year on these lines and with same spirit.

MQM has started making Pakistan clean and green in Karachi. With the involvement of all political parties and people in this campaign we can make our country clean and green.

He expressed these views while talking to media representatives after inaugurating the 15 day cleanliness drive by city government and towns in Civic Centre on Thursday.

Provincial Minister for Information Technology Raza Haroon, Administrator Karachi Fazlur Rehman DCO Karachi Muhammad Hussain Syed, EDOs, towns and city government officers were also present on this occasion.

Talking to media Dr. Farooq Sattar said during last two years most of the 9 thousand tonnes of garbage produced in city went into the sewage and storm water drains which he called a cause of concern.
He said all this waste should instead go to landfill site so that the city could be saved from outbreak of contagious diseases.

The federal minister said provincial minister Raza Haroon on behalf of MQM looking into the affairs of civic bodies under a political adjustment and under his monitoring the green and clean Karachi campaign was started. City will be made more and more clean and green during the current campaign. Citizens of Karachi should also get maximum opportunity to take part in this work as prevention is always better than cure.

“Present is the era of public private partnership but this campaign is not a commercial venture and is only for the better health of people and cleanliness in city. People in Karachi and civic bodies would jointly participate in the drive so that a such a system could be devised that all the garbage in city is lifted and dispose off to landfill site under a scientific method”, he said.

Dr. Farooq said it would be a great service to our nation if we could repeat the same work in Hyderabad, Larkana, Badin and in all cities and villages of Pakistan.

This campaign should be carried out in all over the country. MQM has started this in Karachi.
He said local governments were considered nurseries of democracy. Results would have been even better had we had people’s representatives in these organizations, however, we were trying to fulfil our duties in the present prevailing system so that better results could be achieved.

Dr. Farooq said this campaign which is jointly conducted by city government, towns and water board would be made more effective with the addition of DHA, Cantonment Boards and other civic bodies in the cleanliness drive.

Replying a query the federal minister said the experiment of separating KBCA and other bodies from District Government was proved unsuccessful. All political parties have this in their manifesto that there would be a unified system in the civil organizations, therefore, one day these bodies would have to unite, even the land control and police needs to be kept under the control of city government.

He further said that the citizens should not suffer due to disagreements on legislation among the coalition partners. Local government elections should be held under the law so that people’s representatives could serve the citizens on local level.
