Farmer groups, political leaders protest in Delhi against eviction drive in IIOJK

New Delhi, February 24, 2023 (PPI-OT):Indian farmer groups and political leaders from Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir Jammu and Kashmir held a demonstration in New Delhi, today, demanding the withdrawal of the land eviction order under which the administration of the territory is grabbing the lands and properties of the Kashmiri people. The participants of the demonstration organised by the All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) and Jammu and Kashmir Kisan Tehreek (JKKT) at Jantar Mantar also demanded withdrawal of changes in land laws in IIOJK, and said the evictions should be stopped.

Addressing the protesters, Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, said while a petition on abrogation of Articles 370 and 35-A is still pending with the Indian Supreme Court, laws are being changed in IIOJK. “Laws are being changed in Jammu and Kashmir, and common, working class people, especially farmers, are getting affected. The change in law which allows outsiders to buy land in J and K is not right,” he said, adding this is a conspiracy to sell agricultural land to corporates.

Yechury also questioned why elections were not being held in the occupied territory, even though the delimitation exercise was over. CPI-M leader from IIOJK, Muhammad Yusuf Tarigami, said no consultations were held with local bodies before carrying out the evictions. He said evictions should be stopped immediately. “They’re not some land mafia, if a small farmer is cultivating common land, or has made a small house, they should not be evicted,” he said. He also slammed the IIOJK administration over recently introduced property tax in the territory.
