Expert Advisory Cell to be established within the ministry: Anwar Cheema
Islamabad: Federal Minister for Production, Ch. Anwar Ali Cheema has directed to establish an Expert Advisory Cell, for technical assistance, within the Ministry. The Minister observed that there was a dire need of forging mutual corporation and coordination among different organizations/ corporations/ subsidiaries of the Ministry. “We need to come up with measures undertaking financial prudence and avoiding unnecessary expenditures”, the Minister emphasized.
While chairing a meeting with the Chairmen/ CEOs/ Heads of all Corporations/ Organizations of the Ministry, Ch. Anwar Ali Cheema assured the participants that the Ministry will go all out for revitalizing and rehabilitating the weaker organs of the Ministry.
“We will further encourage the profit-earning and well-performing units of the Ministry”, he added. In this regard, there needs to develop close liason and mutual coordination between the Ministry and all of its linked units, the Minister advised.
During his presentation, the Acting Chief Executive of Pakistan Steel Mills, Mr. Wasif Mehmood, briefed the Minister regarding the operations, functioning and performance of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM). While referring to the visit of the President of Pakistan to Russia , Mr. Wasif said that the expansion will be done in two phases.
The phase-I envisages capacity expansion upto 1.5 mtpy and the phase-II is programmed to enhance capacity upto 3.0 mtpy. However, the CEO informed that the immediate restructuring of the PSM will require recapitalization and funding injection by the government. In addition to it, the CEO requested the Minister to approach the Cabinet regarding ban on export of iron ore or imposition of regulatory duty on export of local ore. Due to heavy losses, PSM is incapable to increase its production. Therefore, the government should inject funds for acquisition of stock for atleast two months, the CEO added.
While presenting on State Engineering Corporation (SEC), Mr. Ghulam Rasool – Chairman (SEC), informed the Minister that the SEC was a state-owned holding corporation with a share capital of 1000 million rupees fully subscribed by government. Mr. Ghulam Rasool briefed about the functions of SEC, which mainly focuses on acquisition and development of medium to High level manufacturing technologies.
On the issue of privatization, the Minister was briefed that many units of the Ministry, including Heavy Electrical Complex (HEC) and Pakistan Machine Tools Factory (PMTF) were on the privatization list. The Minister asked the MDs and CEOs of relevant units to come up with more practicable and viable solutions to uplift the national assets so that their privatization could be avoided.
Earlier, Mr. Javed Iqbal Awan in his introductory remarks, said that the meeting was meant to improve synergic cooperation and sensitization of problems faced by the subsidiary units of the Ministry. Mr. Awan appreciated the active and positive involvement and interest of the Minister in order to ensure better, performance of the Ministry.
In his concluding remarks, the Minister appreciated the efforts made by the officials of the Ministry to overcome various administrative and financial problems faced by the newly-formed Ministry. The Minister suggested to all the CEOs to donate generously to flood-affectees.
