Drought in Tannery Zone, Pakistan Tanners Association demands reverse osmosis plants

Karachi, June 04, 2015 (PPI-OT): Pakistan Tanners Association (PTA) demanded Tuesday immediate installation of RO (reverse osmosis) plants at the tannery zone in Korangi industrial area to save billion dollar exports of leather and leather goods threatened due to non-supply of water, the basic raw material for leather industry.

In a media release, Chairman PTA (SZ) Hamid A Zahoor while appreciating the announcement by Provincial Minister for Local Bodies, Sharjeel Memon for installation of RO plants in various areas of Karachi said that Governor Sindh had released Rs44 million from his special funds to Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) for laying water trunk main for the supply of five million gallons per day water to leather industry.

The KWSB did not release water in to the pipeline with 12 inches diameter laid on a two-kilometre distance from Chamra roundabout to tannery zone. “The pipeline is now rusting badly due to non-supply of water for the last two and half years,” he added.

The PTA condemned the pathetic attitude by the high-ups of KWSB for squandering precious resources without water supply to the cluster of leather industries. The tannery zone has not been getting water from KWSB for over a decade and the only water source was underground wells that were drying up fast and now the industrial estate faced a drought like situation, said the release. RO plants committed by KWSB are yet to be installed, it said.

Hamid appealed the Governor Sindh and Minister for Local Government Sharjeel Memon to come to the rescue and immediately install four RO plants in the tannery zone, which were approved and PC-I of which is lying with the KWSB.
