Denmark Provides First Round of Immediate Aid for Flood Relief

Islamabad: The Government of Denmark has as part of its immediate response to the disastrous floods, donated almost USD 60,000 to Pakistan’s Natural Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to provide urgent assistance to the flood victims, says a press release received here today from Denmark.

The announcement of the Danish emergency response was made during a meeting between the Danish Ambassador to Pakistan, Mr. Uffe Wolffhechel and Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir, Chairman NDMA at the NDMA Headquarters.

The Danish ambassador expressed great concern over the health and well being of the 5,4 million Pakistanis, who have been affected by the floods this year, especially women and children.

”Pakistan is facing yet another huge humanitarian challenge. It is only a year back that we all witnessed the vulnerability of the people who are affected by these floods. This year, we once again find these people fighting to survive.

More than 800,000 people have been displaced from their homes – Women and children being the most vulnerable groups continue to face serious health issues, which definitely need to be a focal point in the flood relief program along with provision of food and shelter”, Mr. Wollffhechel said.

The ambassador further added that the Danish Government is preparing a response plan based on the ”flash appeal” made jointly by the Government of Pakistan and the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, OCHA last week. ” Our support to the flood victims is ongoing and we are working towards providing further assistance to the flood victims across Pakistan”.

The NDMA Chairman expressed great gratitude to the Government of Denmark for providing immediate aid for flood relief activities and assured that all the aid money would be benefiting the victims on immediate basis.

Dr. Zafar Iqbal highlighted that shelter was one of the most required items at current stage as many families have been displaced and living under vulnerable circumstances.

During the floods last year, Denmark, a country of 5.4 million people, was among the first donors to show their immediate support to Pakistan, donating a total of USD 22 million dollars as relief contribution.
