Curfew in Badgam after death of woman injured by cop

Srinagar, July 27 2013 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, the authorities imposed curfew in the Badgam district, today, after the death of a woman who was injured by an Indian policeman on Tuesday.

A 55-year-old Fatima of Dadina area of Badgam, who was critically injured after she was hit in the head by an Indian policeman with his rifle, succumbed to her injuries at Soura Institute of Medical Sciences in Srinagar early this morning. As her body reached Dalina, people took to the streets and staged demonstrations against her killing. They demanded a murder case against the involved policeman.

Family and relatives of the woman told media men that the policeman had beaten her without any reason when she was standing with other women.

The death of the woman has led to a fresh wave of tension in the district. Over two dozen villages of the district had been reeling under curfew without break since the outbreak of sectarian clashes on Tuesday. The authorities have deployed Indian police and troops in strength in the district to prevent people from holding demonstrations against the killing.
