Construction of Dams Inevitable for the Prosperity and Progress of the Country

Islamabad: Faisal Karim Kundi, Acting Speaker, National Assembly has said that construction of Dams was inevitable for prosperity and progress of the country. He said that the construction of Dams would not only control massive loss of water during monsoon season occurred every year but will also be imperative for the better agri-production and to address the energy crises. He expressed these views while presiding over a meeting regarding Gomal Zam Dam in Parliament House, today.

The meeting was attended by Syed Ragib Abbas, Member (Water), WAPDA, Representatives of Gomal Zam and Irrigation Department Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and large number of farmers of District Tank.

The Acting Speaker expressed his concern over non inclusion of Waran Canal in PC-I of Gomal Zam Dam. He said that this was a very important canal which would irrigate vast area of the region. He said that due to non inclusion of the said canal in the PC-I of the Gomal Zam Dam, the whole project has become redundant causing grave concern amongst the people of the area. He directed the WAPDA to include the WARAN canal in PC-I project.

The Member WAPDA assured the Acting Speaker that priority will be given to Waran canal and after its redesigning the work on project will be started within two months. He also apprised that USAID has approved 40 million US dollar for said project and this project will be completed in the end of the next year. He said that besides irrigation purpose this project will also generate 17 megawatt electricity which will improve economy of the area.

The Member WAPDA has said that a meeting of all stakeholders will be convened in month of October regarding Gomal Zam Dam for a comprehensive briefing to the stakeholders and to get their suggestions for betterment of the said project. He said that in light of their suggestions a modus operandi for distribution of water and rules of regulation would be prepared and publish in the shape of booklet.

The Acting Speaker directed WAPDA to initiate work on CRBC gravity cum uplift project which was a long outstanding demand of the people of D. I. Khan. He said that a vast barren area of the D. I. Khan and adjacent districts will be cultivated by this project. He said that it will boost the economy of the area and uplift the life standard of the people.

He also asked the WAPDA for the construction of bridge at Khor Nalah which was destroyed due to last year flood and early repairs of CRBC. The farmers from District Tank and D. I. Khan thanked the Acting Speaker for taking keen interest in the uplift of the area.
