Commercial production of 660 mega watt coal fired power generation to start from 2018

Islamabad, August 13, 2015 (PPI-OT):The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC), Shamsuddin Ahmed Shaikh on Thursday said that commercial production of 660 MW coal fired energy generation would start by the year 2018. Highlighting the importance of the Thar coal mining project, Mr. Shaikh said that desert in Sindh province contained the world’s 7th largest coal reserves with total 175 billion tons of coal.

Out of 175 billion tons reserves, SECMC had been allocated Thar block-II and according to competent person statement (CPS) by RWE -Germany, Thar Block-II has billion tons of Lignite resources out of which 1.57 billion tons were explore able, he added. Thar Block-II, he said, alone could produce 5000 MW for fifty years adding that mine lease for thirty years (extendable to another 30 years) had been issued.

Mr. Shaikh said that Thar coal fields could be compared to many operating Open Pit Mines of the World, Thar has comparatively higher heating value, lower surplus and lower ash contents as compared to other operational mines in the world. He further informed that stripping ratio and heating value of Thar Block-II was feasible for successful Mines operation.

Thar Lignite could be utilized in power plants both at mines mouth as well as suitable locations like Jamshoro because lignite could be transported as being practiced in places like India, China and Germany. RWE -Germany study confirmed that Thar Lignite could also be transported safely via road and rail, he added.

Mr. Shaikh applauded the Federal and Sindh governments for their cooperation and support in the execution of Thar coal mines and power generation. He also lauded the government for including the Thar SECMC and Energy Power generation Limited (EPTL) in China Pakistan Economic Corridor projects.
He said that under the CPEC, Chinese investments were expected to add 16,000 MW of electricity by 2021, easing Pakistan’s energy shortages to a considerable extent.

Mr. Shaikh said that 16 projects in the energy sector and 5 projects in the transport sector were selected as Early harvest Project (EHP). The Federal government and government of Sindh’s support had been pivotal for resolving issues and bringing the project on the verge of achieving financial close. He informed the journalists that a lot progress has been made and the SECMC was all set to achieve financial close in 4th quarter 2015.

Shamsuddin Sheikh highlighting the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) vowed to develop the people of Thar as the project gets developed 10 percent of the project cost to people of Thar including relocation and land purchase and 2 percent of profit before tax to CSR.

Mr. Shaikh added “MoU has been signed with the Citizen Foundation to set up school units as estimated cost of Rs 148.5 million in Tharparkar area”, he remarked. He also highlighted the steps taken by the company for providing drinking water and health and educational facilities in the Thar area.
