Chairman Businessmen Group and former President Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry Call on Federal Interior Minister

Karachi: Chairman Businessmen Group and former President KCCI in an important meeting on bad law and order situation with Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik held at Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry highlighted that street crimes are at peak in Karachi and no home or street is safe from the criminals, every second person is in the city is affected.

He stated that extortion chits have been distributed to Small Traders in almost every market of Karachi city and criminal elements without any fear of law enforcing agencies are moving freely in every corner of the city.

Siraj Teli stated that last year, subsequent to various meetings with Federal Interior Minister regarding deteriorating law and order situation, police pickets were formed and dedicated/ excessive police staff was deployed for the police stations, pickets and patrolling in the affected areas which has been reduced to more than fifty percent.

He demanded to restore the actual deployment/ strength of police in the police stations, pickets and for patrolling within 24 hours. He appreciated the Federal Interior Minister to allow the members of business community to carry their licensed weapons for their safety and security and to protect their lives under prevailing bad law and order situation.

Senior Vice President Younus Muhammad Bashir voiced that the law and order problems occurred when the continuity of security measures is interrupted and miscreants take the illegal advantage. He urged the Federal Minister for persistent and concrete measures to curb the criminal activities.

Federal Interior Minister Rehman Malik informed the President of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari directed him to take concrete measures to control the bad law and order situation in Karachi and eliminate extortion in Karachi. He announced that all political parties having stakes in Karachi have unanimously agreed cohesively that no party will support any criminals/ extortionists.

He also directed to IG Police to take indiscriminate and stern action against extortionist rejecting all pressures whatsoever and criminals must be punished. He said that anti-extortion legislation would be made and extortion would be declared as non-bail offence with punishment of seven years of prison under the proposed anti-extortion act. Crackdown against the criminals would be launched tonight, he disclosed.

Interior Minister informed that an important meeting under his chair was held at Chief Minister House with head of all law enforcing agencies whereby it is decided to constitute a Task Force comprising of ISI, IB, FIA, Rangers headed by DIG Police to take severe action against the criminals involved in extortion in the city.

He informed that to control criminal activities, 10,000 new personnel are recruited and two helicopters are provided to Sindh Government for surveillance and support the task force to curb the increased extortion activities.

He apprised that the Government has also decided to give the mobile phone locator under the supervision of PTA to the Sindh Government. He said that the cellular companies were not operating with responsibility. PTA had been instructed to order all service providers that with effect from 1st May no SIM will be sold directly to consumer and deliver all new purchased SIM via courier on the postal address of buyer.

It would be mandatory for cellular companies to inform the IMEI numbers to PTA enabling law-enforcing agencies to trace stolen phones. He also warned the shopkeepers not purchase or sell the stolen/ snatched mobiles as case will be lodged under terrorist act against violators. He also advised the general public not to purchase stolen/snatched mobiles.

Responding instantly to the demands of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the representatives of business and industrial community, Rehman Malik announced that a facilitation desk of NADRA, Passport and arms license would be established in the KCCI premises and gave directives to the concerned to implement the same in next four weeks.

Federal Interior Minister also suspended Deputy Director FIA Abdul Shakoor Memon who was reportedly involved in taking illegal gratification from various member of the business community.

Vice Chairmen Businessmen Group and former Presidents KCCI Zubair Motiwala, Haroon Farooki, Anjum Nisar, Vice President Zia Ahmed Khan, Chairman Law and Order Committee Hafeez Aziz, Chief PCLC Younus Soomro, Chairman SITE Association of Industry Irfan Motan, representative from Small Trader and various markets of Karachi and IG Sindh Mushtaq Shah, and other DIGs and SSPs also participated in the meeting.
