Center of Excellence to be established for mentally disabled children: Dr. Mehr Taj

Peshawar, April 09, 2015 (PPI-OT): Special Assistant to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa for Social Welfare Dr. Mehr Taj Roghani has disclosed that the provincial government has planned to establish a Centre of excellence for the welfare of the mentally disabled children to provide them better opportunities of education and vocational training to enable them to achieve dignified status in the society.

She was addressing a seminar on “Awareness, early detection and treatment of Autism” at Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University for women at Larama, Peshawar. The seminar was jointly arranged by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto University for women and Pakistan Scientific and technological Centre for Information (PASTIC).

Students, teachers, psychologists and social workers attended the seminar. Those who spoke on the occasion included ,Dr. Razia Sultan, VC, Shaheed Benazir University for women, Dr Kaneez Fatima, Principal Home Economics College. Miss. Nageen, Director PASTIC,Dr, Irfan, Peshawar Medical College, Dr. Saqib Siddique, KTH, Mrs. Kausar Suhail, Ghazala Ali Khan and Dr. Farhat Humayun.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Mehr Taj Roghani stressed the need of arranging of awareness about mentally disabled children and added that Development of such children was collective responsibility of the society. She informed the participants of the seminar that mentally disabled children, which were a neglected portion of the society i.e. 12 to 15 percent of the population of the province.

Referring to the strategy of the government for the welfare of the mentally retarded children, she said that a center under the title of “TABDELI” would be established in Peshawar to provide excellent skill and educational faclilitaly to such children.

“This center will provide vocational training, business development, education, legal assistance and social inclusive services to the to the mentally disabled children” she explained. Roghani deplored that the existing educational and training facilities were not sufficient for the mentally and physically disabled children in the province. She vowed that government would include schemes for the establishment and improvement of such facilities in the next ADP.

Earlier, experts highlighted in detail signs and symptoms of the psychological diseases, Autism. They informed that these diseases occur to one out of 110 children usually, urging proper awareness about the disease. The experts pin pointed that early diagnose and in-time and proper treatment could minimizing negative effects of the disease.

Schields on this ocassion were given away to Dr. Razia Sultana, Dr Kaneez Fatima, Dr. Irfan Dr. Saqib, Ghazala, Nageen and Farhat for their services for the welfare of the mentally disabled children.
