Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority despite having scarce resources providing commendable services for development of SME sector in Pakistan: Toaha Hussain Bugti

Lahore, December 31, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA), despite being a lean organization with scarce resources, is providing commendable services for development of SMEs sector in Pakistan. It was stated by Mr. Toaha Hussain Bugti, Directing staff, Senior Management Wing of the National Management College (NMC) today after taking a briefing from Mr. Alamgir Chaudhry, CEO SMEDA on functioning and role of the organization in SME development.

The briefing was arranged at SMEDA head office for a 15-member delegation comprising participants of the 16th Senior Management Course in NMC. The delegation included the senior officers from Pakistan Administrative Services, Police, Secretariat, Customs, Information, Audit and Accounts, Inland Revenue, Postal Services, Railways, Foreign Service, Ex-Cadre and the Provincial Services.

Mr. Toaha appreciated the way by which SMEDA was towing the government vision of developing SMEs for investment and employment generation in the country. Earlier, CEO SMEDA Mr. Alamgir Chaudhry delivered the address of welcome in honor of the delegates and apprised them about role of SMEDA in development of SME sector in Pakistan.

While giving highlights of SMEDA future targets, CEO SMEDA especially referred to SMEDA’s five-year SME Development plan and informed that by the end of 2018, the plan would be able to add up 10 million new job opportunities with an addition of 0.27 million new SMEs and an increase of US $ 36 billion in national exports.

He further informed that SMEDA had been engaged in PSDP projects since the year 2006. “We have undertaken 27 PSDP projects of Rs. 3.82 billion so far including an investment of Rs. 1047.15 million by private sector and provincial governments” he said adding that nine projects of worth Rs.784.14 million had successfully been completed, whereas, 10 projects of worth Rs.1663.05 million investment were operational or under execution.

The members of delegation asked a number of questions about SMEDA services, projects and operation during discussion, which were replied by CEO as well as the sectoral experts of SMEDA, which include Mr. Hasanien Javed, Provincial Chief SMEDA-Punjab, Ms. Nadia Jahangir Seth, Head Policy and Planning Division and Mr. Ashfaq Ahmad, Head Industry Support Cell.
