Erdogan, Trump agree Assad should be held responsible for his actions

Ankara (IINA) US President Donald Trump and his Turkish counterpart have agreed that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is to be held responsible for the chemical attack on Khan Shaykhun area in rural Idlib early this month.

This came in a phone conversation between the two leaders, according to a statement issued by the Turkish presidential press office on Monday.

During the call, Trump congratulated Erdogan following a Yes win on a constitutional referendum held across Turkey's provinces on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported.

The call came a day after more than 51 percent of Turks voted in favor of 18 constitutional amendments that will, among other things, see Turkey switch from a parliamentary to a presidential system of governance.

On April 4, at least 100 civilians, most of them children and women, were killed and 500 others injured in a chemical attack launched by the Syrian regime on the opposition-held town of Khan Shaykhun in rural Idlib.

Trump also thanked Turkey for its support for US missile strikes on a Syrian air base in retaliation for the chemical attack as both men stressed the need for cooperation in the fight against terror groups, including Daesh.
